Casual Play
The courts can be used free of charge by members at most times. However, it is advisable
to check court availability and book your court with the
booking secretary
to ensure the courts are free. Prior bookings including club sessions and competitive matches take
precedence over someone arriving on spec. If you need to purchase new tennis balls,
then the booking secretary has Slazenger XLs available at £6 for 4.
Club Sessions
These sessions are an ideal opportunity to just turn up and play against other members. All
play is usually doubles and the atmosphere relaxed. Short sets of seven games are played
(seven games are played regardless of score, rather than the best of seven games) and everyone
gets a fair chance of playing and with different partners. The sessions are on Wednesdays
and Fridays starting from 6.30pm. You play for as long as you and sufficient others wish.
The club provides balls. For those of you who are more familiar with tennis conventions
through watching Wimbledon you will find a couple of unfamiliar scoring short cuts.
‘15’ is often referred to as ‘5’ eg 40-5 rather than 40-15; advantage to the server is referred
to as ‘van-in’ and against the server as ‘van-out’.
Special Sessions
From time to time the club arranges special ‘rusty tennis’, open days or family sessions, usually at weekends.
Prospective and existing members are invited to sample the clubs facilities free of charge.
