Rosebowl Tournament

A warm sunny October morning sandwiched between 2 days of rain was the perfect setting for the Rosebowl Tournament.
A strong field of seven men and eight ladies, including some new faces, made for some fun and competitive tennis. The format of six rounds of mixed doubles was enhanced by ranking all the players after the first five rounds and matching the top pairs in a series of three finals.
The top match featured Freya Block & Richard Valdez playing Jayne Block & Gareth Prosser. Richard & Freya took the early advantage to lead 3-1. They kept up the pressure to lead 40-15 in the fifth game but Jayne & Gareth defended two match points before finally losing the game. With the pressure off them, Richard & Freya relaxed and Jayne & Gareth won the last two games for a final score of 4-3. Well done, Richard & Freya, winners of the Rosebowl 2009. A special mention to Chris Block for being able to back a winner in the final either way!
After play everyone enjoyed soup, crusty bread and cakes provided by Ann Jones, Carolyn Robinson, Sandie Meadows, Sue Brown and Linda Taylor. Here are a few photographs of the morning's event courtesy of Denis Jones.
