More Information on How It Works

  • Matches are arranged by participants ‘phoning each other to arrange a mutually convenient time to play.
  • All matches in the tournament will follow the same format this year, so there will be no short sets as we used to do in the group stages. All matches will comprise two normal tiebreak sets (i.e. if games reach 6-6 then play normal tiebreak, first to 7 points and by 2 clear points is the winner). If the match is tied at one set all then the match will be decided by a champion’s tie-break (first to 10 points, and by 2 clear points). This is a standard match format now used on the Seniors tour and in many doubles events, it suits our environment of mixed age and ability, and keeps matches in a manageable timeframe.
  • The Champions tiebreak follows the same rules as a normal tiebreak, aside from being first to 10, i.e. players changes ends after every 6 points, the serve rotates in the same way, i.e. player 1 servers the first point, the next player servers two points etc.
  • Players/pairs score 2 points for a win. At the end of the group stage, if players/pairs are tied on equal points then the following will be taken into consideration to decide the result: firstly number of sets won, secondly least number of sets lost, thirdly number of games won, fourthly least number of games lost, lastly if still level, lottery.
  • At the group stage each player/pair in a group plays every other player/pair in the group. Each match consists of 2 tiebreak sets and if needed, a champion’s tiebreak. The game scores in the first two sets are not relevant at this stage, so if the sets are decided 7-6 0-6 the scores are level at that point, and a champion’s tiebreak is played.
  • The semi-final phase will be best of two tiebreak sets and if tied at 1 set all then a champion’s tiebreak will decide the winner.
  • The final is the same format, the first two sets being tiebreak sets, and the final set being a champion’s tiebreak.
  • Players are responsible for arranging and playing their matches by the deadlines set. Any player having difficulties in getting another player to respond to efforts to arrange a game should report this to the tournament referee, Brendan Carroll (890443). The tournament referee has the right to withdraw any player from the tournament who, in the view of the referee is not reasonably making him/herself available to play tournament matches.
  • Any match curtailed by weather conditions must be restarted at a later time or date from the point at which play ceased.
  • Any player who is forced to, or voluntarily drops out of, the tournament must notify the tournament referee and will have all matches played declared void.
  • Any player unable to play on finals day will be required to scratch from the tournament with their matches declared void. All finals will be played on finals day, 15th July, 2007.
  • All entry fees must be paid by May 1st.
  • Scores must be entered on the score sheets displayed outside the clubhouse. Score should include the details for each set. E.g. if Pair 5 beat Pair 2 6-4, 6-7, 10-7 the scores would be entered as follows:

      Pair 1  Pair 2  Pair 3  Pair 4  Pair 5  Total
    Pair 1
    Pair 2          4-6 7-6 7-10
    Pair 3
    Pair 4
    Pair 5    6-4 6-7 10-7
